Shady Havoc speeds into the limelight
The veteran Christchurch owner-trainer-breeder, Jock Walsh, has been In the greyhound game too long to become emotionally Involved when one of his charges scores an important triumph. But there was no mistaking the grin of success on Walsh’s face when he produced the sleek black Planet-Debbie Havoc bitch, Shady Havoc, to win the Bond Street open event at the Christchurch club’s equalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening. Shady Havoc has raced successfully throughout the country for the last two years, but for much of this time the limelight has focused on her two brilliant litter sisters. Sally Havoc and Rise and Shine. The open race last evening attracted only five runners, but again Shady Havoc was regarded as a possible place-getter as she had drawn outside two up and coming young longtails, Hobbs Galore and Red Shadow.
In the parade before the race, Shady Havoc gave the impression that she was ready to run boldly. She looked a picture of fitness and was only too eager to take her place in box five. When the traps were released, Shady Havoc made her customary great start. As Tiger Moss, Rod Shadow and Hobbs Galore became involved in squeezing at the first bend, the Planet bitch sprinted around the outside and had four lengths’ advantage into the back straight.
Red Shadow and Hobbs Galore both gave chase, but it was in vain, although they reduced Shady Havoc’s winning margin to two lengths. Considering it was his first appearance against the open dogs. Red Shadow performed exceedingly well to hold second from Hobbs Galore, which was running on as well as any. Rex Havoc, a litter brother to the winner, made a rare mistake at the start, but ha re-
covered to beat Tiger Moss for fourth.
Although Gordon Kingston failed to succeed with Red Shadow, he had ample compensation when a litter sister, Miss Print, galloped away with the limit event, in a time o.2sec faster than recorded by Shady Havoc.
The Irish Rover — Rosearna brown bitch confirmed her rating as one of the top chasers in Christchurch. She was favoured by the inside draw and jumped well, but still failed to beat Mr Christian and Timmy Havoc to the first bend.
However. Miss Print received a perfect run along the rails down the back straight and had assumed control before the home bend.
I Mr Christian. racing very keenly, loomed as a major threat as they swung into the home straight, but he lost his footing on the bend. Miss Print was unchallenged to win convincingly from her kennel-mate, Silver Knight, and Mr Christian, which was not disgraced.
One of the features of the evening was provided by the puppy, Kiwi Princess, which set a new track record over the 340 m sprint. The King Miller — Tiny Nymph bettered the record set by the well-performed Bomb’s Away by O.lsec. Kiwi Princess, almost 18 months, has had only limited experience. She finished second In a qualifying trial, but last evening was her first race outing for trainer, Neil Harrison. Mikado continued her improvement by winning the novice sprint, and Smokey Eyes realised some of her true ability when she romped away by sev en lengths to graduate from progressive class.
The Old Hobbs — Moss Patches bitch escaped trouble at the first bend and won untested in a time that bettered Shadv Havoc’s winning effort in the opening class. Results:—
