WELLINGTON, March 16. Two French sailors who did not know it was ilelgal to possess cannabis in New Zealand were fined $7O each in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court today. Mr 1. Hay, S.M., heard that Customs men had searched the ship Var, and found a small quantity of hashish in both of the defendant’s cabins.

Jean-Luc Andrew Bodin, aged 21, and Gilbert Pierre Dutz, aged 21, could not understand English, but they pleaded guilty through their counsel Mr D. J. Howman. Mr Howman said the men possessed the cannabis for their own use, and had no intention of bringing It ashore. He said the two men, who had told Customs officials that they had obtained the cannabis in Calcutta, India, had no idea that possession of cannabis was illegal In this country.
