Call for nuclear safeguards

WELLINGTON, March 17. The Government and all concerned should realise now that members of the Harbours' Association were, firm in the belief that adequate safeguards must be provided if nuclear vessels were to be handled at New Zealand ports, the president (Mr R. W. Carr) told the annual conference today. Harbour boards would be responsible for the passage and berthing of such vessels, he said. “We do not doubt that A matter of such gravity is under close examination by senior Government officials. We know.that port authorities overseas implement the inbst detailed protection measures with meticulous care. New Zealand must conform to established overseas practice,” said Mr Carr. Whether nuclear vessels came to New Zealand regularly or intermittently, ports must be safeguarded and the public fully informed of protection measures, he said.
