Spanish seamen relax
The death of Spain's General Franco has meant a relaxation of the iron grip in which the country’s political life has been held for the last 40 years.
Already the new mood in Spain is being reflected by Spanish seamen visiting New Zealand who, for the first time, feel free to discuss and criticise politics without fear of recriminations.
On board the Continental Pioneer, a Liberian “Bulky” with a Spanish crew which arrived in Lyttelton on Sunday, conversation invariably returned to the political situation in Spain. The consensus was that most Spaniards would opt for a democratic form of government and that communism was unlikely to get a foothold in a country which had made major economic advances in the past 10 years. Wages on Spanish ships are now much the same as on foreign vessels and Spain feels she has not far to go to join other western countries at the top of the “economic heap.”
