Gaol for theft from prisoners

t.V.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 17. A former Mt Crawford Prison clerk, William Alan Nikora, aged 37, was sentenced to six months imprisonment on a charge of theft of $3853 when he appeared in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court today. Nikora had two weeks previously pleaded guilty to the charge of theft by failing to account. He had taken the money, much of it belonging to Mt Crawford prisoners, while he was employed by the Justice Department. Sentencing Nikora, Mr K. L. Richardson, S.M., said that although it was unlikely Nikora would commit such a crime again a penalty which would act as a deterrent for others in similar positions of trust had to be imposed. Nikora had taken the money, knowing it was not his own, at the rate of $lOOO a month for four months. It was calculated theft, the Magistrate said.
