Centre for elderly
A centre for senior citizens at 64 Cashel Street will be opened by the Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) on Saturday.
The secretary of the Aged; People’s Welfare Council (Mr G. A. Mole) said the building was intended as a drop-in centre for senior citizens who might be in town shopping. They could go there to have something to eat, to sit down, chat, or read. The centre, which is in a converted house, has two lounges which are joined together, a dining area, and! well-equipped kitchen. Mr Mole said it was likely that the centre would be staffed by voluntary helpers. A hostess might be necessary, and a person would be
[required to do the catering. ' It was hoped that social workers from the Aged People’s Welfare Council, ' whose office was also in I Cashel Street, would see [the senior citizens at the [centre to discuss any problems.
It is hoped that the new centre will complement three suburban centres already being run by the council. These provide craft work, games, and companionship for senior citizens. Two more centres are being prepared for use.
The Minister of Social! Welfare (Mr Walker) will speak at the opening and five members of Parliament, Mr B. Barclay, Mr M. Connolly, Mrs M. Batchelor, | Miss C. Dewe. Mr E. S. F. Holland and Mr D. F. Quigley will also be present.
