African situation 'fluid’
,Z. Press Association
WELLINGTON, Mar. 15. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) today denied suggestions that New Zealand was taking an independent line over the question of aid to Mozambique and the Rhodesian situation.
Replying to questions at a lunch-time press conference he said, “We see the whole situation as very fluid.”
While Mr Muldoon said New Zealand’s line at this stage was not independent he gave no indication of what the Government’s firm policy would be. Mr Muldoon said New Zealand was a long way away from Africa and was receiving its information on the situation from a variety of sources.
But he said the Government would support a settlement in Rhodesia which led to a return of British responsibility for the region, and would support the reentry of Rhodesia into the Commonwealth in those circumstances.
