First wine harvest begins
Staff of Montana Wines, Ltd, yesterday began picking the first grapes from vines planted three years ago just outside Blenheim. Between 15 and 20 tons of Riesling grapes will be taken by truck to Gisborne within the next two days for processing, writes the Blenheim reporter of ‘The Press.”
This first shipment is only a sample from the Riesling vineyard. The company’s manager in Blenheim (Mr J. Marris) said that the season had been particularly good, and the wine was eagerly awaited.
Initially, the company will produce wine from two grapes—the Riesling Sylvaner, and Cabernet Sauvigon—but later it is hoped also to produce from Pinotage Noir and Traminer vines.
The company has planted about 430 acres of the 1000 it is holding for vineyards.
Mr Marris said it was expected that a winery would be built at Riverland. on the eastern side of Blenheim, in time for the 1977 harvest.
