‘Lighthouse should stay’
The Akaroa lighthouse! i should not be moved to a i site more accessible to the public when it was replaced by an automatic light, the Canterbury regional committee of the Historic Places Trust decided in Christchurch 'on Wednesday, the secretary: of the committee (Mr J. R.. Ellison) said. Mr Ellison said the topic had been raised after an article in “The Press’' said that some members of Akaroa and Bavs Lions’ Club had suggested that the lighthouse he rebuilt where it would be easier for the public to see. “The committee favours the retention of the lighthouse at Akaroa. but not as a tourist attraction in town.” Mr Ellison said “If the buildin g is tn he preserved, we (want it tn remain in its exist-j ing place.”
