The Australian singles player, John Newcombe and Tony Roche, completed the demolition of Indonesia’s Davis Cup team when they won the final two singles of the eastern zone semi-final series in Hobart on Saturday.
Newcombe. aged 30, although lethargic early, whipped through the Indoinesian number one. Atet [Wyono, in one hour, 6-2. 6-2. 16-1. Later left-hander Roche, 'aged 30, made it five rubbers to nil for Australia when he straight-setted Indonesia’s “reserve,” Yustedjo Tarik, 6-3. 6-2, 6-2.
Winning the tie and gain’ ing the right to play in the eastern zone final in Brisbane from February 27-29 took the two Australians a total of only 370 minutes. Newcombe and Roche, who played both the singles and doubles against Indonesia, will again spearhead the cup effort against either New Zealand or India in Queentj land.
The cup captain. Neale Fraser, said after victory that two other leading Australians, Ross Case and Geofl [Masters, would be available I for the next tie and he could [have a team of up to 12 if I they were needed. Fraser said: “Over all. this tie was very satisfying and it is nice to get something like this over so we can advance confidently into the next round.”
