Trampoline and tumbling are relatively new sports in New Zealand, but it is likely New Zealand will be represented at a world championships for the first time in Tulsa, Oklahoma, next year.
Trials will be held in Auckland early in the new year for the team, and it is hoped that four or five competitors will make the trip. The president of the New Zealand Trampoline Association (Mr A. Holt) said the standard of the sport in this country was not up to the best in the world, but the top trampolinists had improved considerably over the last year or two and would improve further with the experience of seeing and competing against the world’s best.
The Russians are top in both trampoline and tumbling and their prowess was recently seen on television in New Zealand.
Tumbling is an offshoot of gymnastics and top gymnasts have dominated the sport in New Zealand. But as the sport grows more competitors are concentrating solely on tumbling.
“There are some who start in gymnastics and don’t make it to the top, but they are very good tumblers,” said Mr Holt.
