Rival gold hunters?
INVERCARGILL, Jan. 6.
At least one fishing boat —and possibly two others —are believed to be racing through bad weather to the Auckland Islands, in an attempt to beat the heavily-publicised expedition of the Acheron to what gold may be on the wreck of the General Grant.
The Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Bluff (Mr P. J. Williams) said tonight that he understood one boat, the Atlantis, was already at the islands, and had been there since Sunday. While both the Acheron, and its back-up vessel, the Golden Harvest, are unable to move because of the weather, the boats are believed to be heading for the islands in separate expeditions. Bluff sources say that the Atlantis owners recently deregistered it as a fishing boat, in an apparent move to beat the stringent Marine requirements by declaring it a yacht. The two other boats which have left port are the Mistron and the Muritai, but it could not be confirmed tonight if they were definitely heading for the Auckland Islands.
