Local body reform discussions

Christchurch area local authorities have been invited to meet the Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) on January 30 for informal discussions on possible moves towards boundary and other government reforms.

In light of the National Government’s antipathy towards some Local Government Act provisions — and suspension of the Local Government Commission’s major activities — Mr Hay believes that any reforms in the near future may have to be sparked locally. Invitations have been sent to the Waimairi, Paparua, and Heathcote country chairmen, and the mayors of Lyttelton and Riccarton boroughs.
