Europium’s luck may change
(IV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A little better luck should see Europium score the first win of her North Island campaign in the A.N.Z. Bank Handicap at Tauherenikau today. The Gate Keeper mare was held up at a vital stage on iSie first day but finished brilliantly when she saw daylight, though a shade too late to bring back the lightweight, Sir Desmond. Sir Desmond is not in the field this time and if the conditions are similar to those on the first day, which seems likely. Europium looks a good bet. Guest Star may be an improver. He has run twice since returning from a spring campaign in Melbourne, most recently in the Manawatu Cup. He was still fresh and pulled hard in an uneven race but still went well enough for seventh. The stars of the field are the top-weight, Black Rod, and the veteran Duty Free. Black Rod, however, was scratched because of the soft going on Thursday and his prospects this time will be governed by the state of the track. As he prefers the going
fim, however, it is unlikely to be ideal for him.
Duty Free ran a useful fifth on the first day. He is not long back from a spell and the race probably improved him. If he is near his best he will be a force to reckon with.
