Policy on ohu

Sir, —The Minister of Lands. Mr V. S. Young (“The Press.” December 24) has intimated that the Labour Government’s ohu scheme will be abandoned. He argues that, being engaged in subsistence agriculture. ohu members do not contribute to society. He ignores the fact that our country is already over-producing and overconsuming. Is it society’s prerogative to require every member to fit into the mould of the average citizen, discouraging or banning lifestyles that differ from the accepted norm? I would suggest to Mr Young that he consider the role of individual freedom in society and whether society might be better served by encouraging a greater variation in the life-styles of its members. — Yours, etc., R. F. BROWNE. December 24, 1975.
