Blow for Johns

The prominent Christchurch bowler. Bernie Johns, will be playing under a handicap when he < ompetes at the national championships. which begin in Dunedin on Monday week Last week. Johns had his bowls and the bag they were in stolen from the boot of his car. He has been lent a set which are of the same size and weight and differ from his own only in colour. However. getting accustomed to a new set of bowls usually takes time and the theft could hardly have come at a worse time for Johns, who will be endeavouring to improve on a very solid record at national tournaments.

The winner of four Christchurch centre titles. Johns is not a stranger to misfortune in respect to Dominion tournaments. A few years ago in Wellington he was through to the latter rounds of the singles and playing extremely well when his father died suddenly and he had to withdraw.
