United star has trial
This will be an anxious week-end for the Christchurch United and Canterbury cent repack. Roy Drinkwater—leither a most welcome [Christmas gift or a sad j finale.
I Drinkwater, who played an outstanding part in United's winning of the national soccer double last season, is on a month's trial with the English Football League third division side Preston North End. And the trial ends on Sunday.
He telephoned the United manager (Terr,- Conley) vesterday from Preston in Lancashire, and said that he had had three matches with the club's reserve side, including fixtures against Leeds United and Everton. “Roy said that he had been playing well but he could not guess at what Preston's decision would be,” Conley said last evening. “Preston has been meeting financial difficulties and may not want to take on another player.
“And to add to their troubles. Preston were knocked out of the English Football Association Cup by a non-league side, Scarborough, last Saturday. “Roy asked if United would bring him back to Christchurch if Preston does not sign him and I said we would, willingly. He will let me know the decision next week.”
