Report on plane crash

(IV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. The pilot who died when his Tiger Moth crashed and burned at Waimate aerodrome on Marclh 31 may have been unconscious when his aircraft began its fatal dive. A Ministry of Transport report or the' crash says the pilot, Mr John Hanlon, of Dunedir, apparently made no attempt to recover when the craft stalled and began a steep dive from about 200 ft. Mr Hanlon, aged 58, was experienced in flying the Tiger Moth in low level, marginal conditions. This, and the apparent lack of a recovery effort, supported the possibility that he had lost consciousness. There was no evidence of mechanical failure, but this possibility could not be eliminated because much of the plane had been destroyed by fire, says the report.
