One win, one loss in rep. bowls

A win and loss—. which was an improve- , meat on tw'o losses i suffered the previous iweek—were recorded by Christchurch representative howls teams on Saturday.

On the Meadowbank green. Oamaru, the Barnett I Tiki was recaptured with a win by 12 games to four over 'North Otago, and on the Hornby green and the Lind-ley-Neill Cup was lost to West Coast BJ-7|. The fours at Hornby had a difficult nor’-west wind to contend with and late in the afternoon a sudden shower sent the players scurrying for shelter. At Oamaru, the conditions were well nigh perfect, the green being little affected by heavy overnight rain.

W'est Coast's victory was more decisive than the scores might suggest and two games were ended prematurely when it was obvious that the results could have no bearing on the outcome. Yet, in spite of the fact that West Coast was a clear winner, Christchurch finished ahead, 331307, on aggregate points. This points advantage was due largely to one overwhelming win in the morning round, when the

South Brighton skip, Tony Deane, scored 41 points to his opponent's 12.

West Coast was ahead, 4S-3J, after the morning round, but there were three games that narrowly escaped Christchurch’s grasp. In the drawn game, George Anderton dropped a ; three on the last end when his , opponent, Stewart Dunn, drove off Anderton’s shot bowl. Neville Poole was two down , on the board and four up on the j head when he changed over on the last end and he then drew a fifth counter. However, his opponent, Fred Goodall, drove with his last bowl, and although he hit front bowls he rolled in for second shot. TEAM FALTERED The other game that Christchurch narrowly missed winning was the one between George Glasgow and Bill Luke. Glasgow was comfortably clear most of the game, but his team faltered towards the finish and a three on the last end enabled Luke to win by two. I The finishes in the afternoon were less dramatic, and with most games changing little over the final stages it was apparent well before the end that West Coast would score the four wins it needed to seal its victory. However, there were still some interesting boards. Dunn was 15-0 up on Ron Croft after eight ends and he eventually won 2611. Fred Sadler was another West Coast skip to race to a big early lead. He was 19-5 up on Arch Johnstone after 12 ends and fives on the final two ends carried him to a 34-12 victory. 1 Sid Buxton (Christchurch) was

12-0 up on his opponent, Luke, after seven ends, but after thirteen ends, Luke held a 13-12 lead. However, Buxton’s team regained the upper hand and won, 23-17. At Oamaru, Christchurch was ahead six games to two after the morning round and it did equally well in the afternoon. Christchurch came out ahead, 338-276, on aggregate points.
