Talks sought
Early action to restore confidence to the wheat-growing industry has been called for by the Member of Parliament for South Canterbury, Mr R. L. G. Talbot, who has been spokesman for wheat growers in Parliament.
Mr Talbot has sent the following telegram to the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider): “May I request that you; have immediate discussions! with all representatives of the I wheat industry in order to make arrangements for an
'early announcement of the wheat price for the 1976-77 season. “The decision should be ;made early in the New Year. I for stability and confidence |to be restored to the industry.” Mr Talbot said last night: ;“The way is now clear to restore confidence and stability to New Zealand's grain growing industry. “After the tardy treatment by Labour during the last three years, immediate discussions with the Minister of Agriculture will enable a close liaison to be established between the Government and the industry. “National’s policy stands out clearly that we aim at making New Zealand selfsufficient in wheat, thus ensuring that there is little need to spend overseas funds to import large quantities of grain,” said Mr Talbot. ! “Present indications are (that a considerable lift in the ] present price will be re- ' quired to ensure the necessary production for the 197677 season.”
