Size of swing not predicted

r.V.Z.P.4 Staff Crsprit) SYDNEY, Decmeber 14. Opinion polls in Australia did not predict the full extent of the huge swing to the Liberal Party—but they all predicted a big Liberal-National Country win, and were much closer than New Zealand opinion polls. Opinion-poll firms in Sydney believe that the compulsory voting provision in Australia allows pollsters to be more accurate than in New Zealand, since electors in Australia cannot give an opinion to a poll, and then not vote. The preferential voting system used in Australia also helps opinion polls, since votes for third parties are largely discounted in Australia, at least in the House of Representatives election. Labour's former Deputy Prime Minister, Dr J. F. Cairns, last evening criticised newspapers for their handling of opinion polls. They did not reflect opinion, but in many cases tended to lead it, he said.
