Successor named to Parkhouse

Clive Power, a young Hamilton man, has been appointed to the professional coach’s position at the Wharenui Swimming Club. The club president (Mr D. W. Cain) announced the appointment last evening, and said that Mr Power, aged 28. will start on February 1. Mr Power will replace the present coach. Pic Parkhouse, who has accepted a coaching position in Canada. An Australian living in Canada. Mr Bruce Windeatt, was to have started with the club I on December 1, but after arriv-i ing in Christchurch to take up the position, returned to Canada for personal reasons. In October, last year, Mr Pow-er took over as coach at the Hamilton Municipal pool, replacing Mr Bob Frankham. one of New Zealand’s best known swimming coaches. For three years before that Mr Power was coaching at the Te Awamutu pool. Although there ts a considerable difference in their ages, the

careers of Messrs Parkhouse and Power have followed similar paths. Both qualified as engineers before turning to swimming coaching, and both started their coaching in the Waikato. Mr Cain said the club w’as pleased with Mr Power’s background. He has partly completed a B.Sc. with biology and physiology as units, both important sciences in swim coaching. Mr Parkhouse will leave on December 19, and until Mr Power takes over, the learn-to-swim activities of the club wili be handled by Miss Toni Sharpies who coaches the age-group competitive squad. Arrangements are still being made to find a coach for the top squad — which contains the Olympics prospects, Mark Treffers. Susan Hunter, and Lynne Rowe — for the period between Mr Parkhouse’s departure and Mr Power’s arrival. Mr Cain said he was sure that a satisfactory arrangement would be made.
