OBITUARY Dr R. Moore

The death occurred in Nelson yesterday of Dr Rina Winnifred Moore, of Nelson. Dr Moore, who was born in Auckland, qualified in medicine at Otago University in 1947 and at the time was believed to be the first woman doctor of part-Maori descent. She became a medical officer at Ngawhatu Hospital, a position she held for 16 years. Before an illness 10 years ago, Dr Moore took an active interest in community affairs and was especially concerned with problems facing the Maori people. She was invited to address gatherings in many parts of New Zealand. She made her mark internationally in 1971 when five papers she submitted to. an international congress of psychiatrists in Jerusalem were accepted and she was invited to deliver them in person. Though ill, she travelled to Israel. Dr Moore was a strong advpcate of social reform and placed her views before many Nelson organisations, and schools, in the face of some controversy.
She is survived by her husband, Mr I. L. Moore, a Nelson solicitor, and a family of four.
