Agreement on drivers’ allowance
Agreement on a location allowance for members of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union who work in Christchurch has been reached. A meeting between representatives of carriers, contractors, and the union took all afternoon to reach the agreement. No details were available, because it will have to be ratified by union members. The union will call a stopwork meeting for 8 a.m. on December 1 to put the proposed allowance to the vote. On November 12, drivers from three large transport firms went on strike to protest against the employers’ refusal to give Christchurch drivers a local allowance agreement. Such an allowance is already paid to drivers in Wellington and Auckland, and is designed to match the higher cost of living in these cities.
