Lilburn on the list

The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, which will begin a four-concert I tour of New Zealand on I Sunday, will play the “Festival Overture” by the ; New Zealand composer, : Douglas Lilburn, at each of | its concerts. Lilburn's work has already been heard in China. The National Youth Orches--1 tra played his “Aotearoa Overture” during its concert tour of China two months ago. Lilburn wrote the “Fes-

tival Overture” in 1939 in London, and it won a centennial music prize in 1940. Its first performance in New Zealand was in 1955. The Shanghai Philharmonic Society is touring Australia, and will give its first New Zealand concert in Hamilton next Tuesday. Other concerts are in Auckland on Friday, November 28, Christchurch on Sunday. November 30,

and in Wellington on Tuesday, December 2. It is also expected to give some impromptu performances during visits to farms, factories and schools. The Chinese musicians will visit a rehearsal of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington next Monday. This will be conducted by Ashley Heenan, who was the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra on its Chinese visit. _
