Wellington and Central win

lUZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Playing a typically cavalier innings, Harry Morgan carried Wellington to a comfortable win over Auckland in the Motor Corporation knock-out match at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Morgan hit a fierce 54 in only 35 minutes and from 39 balls to take Wellington past Auckland’s 150 in 35 overs with more than five overs to spare. Auckland began its innings badly when Rodney Redmond lost his off-stump to the first ball of the match bowled by Ewen Chatfield and from then on never really recovered. The body of the Auckland total was provided by John Warrington, who made a grafting 66 in 147 minutes and young John Reid, who put together a promising 26. The only other Auckland batsman to get going was Terry Jarvis, but with the total at 31 he had a calling mix-up with Warrington and was easily run out. Wellington began its innings dismally, too, when Graham Newdick was bowled in Gary Troup’s first over. But with John Morrison playing some handsome legside shots in going to 29 and Morgan quickly settling in for his hurricane innings the chase soon became a formality. Players from as far afield as Whangarei and Blenheim, travelled to Palmerston North for the Central Districts and Northern Districts, and after four hours and a half of cricket, the result was found on the toss of a coin. With the second team to bat. not having completed 15 overs when rain stopped play, a toss was ordered, and John Parker, the Northern Districts skipper failed to call right. When rain stopped play at 4.15 p.m. Central had set Northern Districts a target of 223 and had the Northern team at 39 for two. At 5.15 p.m. the toss was ordered by the umpires, and so it all means that Central will now go on to meet Wellington at the Basin Reserve next weekend in one of the semi-final matches. Parker won the toss at the start of the match, gave Central the first use of the wicket, and soon found himself in trouble. Graham Edwards of Nelson started the rot for Northern when he scored 49 off 46 deliveries, and then

the Central captain, lan Snook (Taranaki) and Roger Pierce (Nelson) came together for a partnership of 86 for the fourth wicket, which at that stage seemed to have set Central on the winning path. Pierce finished with 58, compiled in 70 minutes, and this was enough to see him win the “man of the match” award. Snook finished with the top score of 63. The Northern vice-captain, Rod Fulton, did not take the field because of influenza, and of the seven bowlers used Hira Unka got the most wickets. Tony Stimpson looked the most effective. AUCKLAND R.
