Double triumph
Charles Trotter, who represented Guernsey in the smallbore rifle shooting competition at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, has overcome a physical handicap to achieve his greatest ambition — the winning of the Queen’s Prize at Bisley. Trotter, who is still unable to walk without crutches after a car crash in Kenya several years ago, was one of six marksmen who had to shoot off for the blue riband event in fullbore shooting. He won it outright with 24 out of 25.
At the Commonwealth Games, Trotter finished sixth in a field of 24 in the smallbore event. He never dropped below 96 over the six matches and totalled 586 from a possible 600 — six points behind the gold medal winner, Mrs Yvonne Gowland, of Australia. He was one point behind New Zealand’s renowned smallbore shooter, lan Ballinger (Christchurch). It was only the second occasion that a Guernsey representative had won the major honours at Bisley — the other success was 76 years ago.
