Avonside III has good win
The victorious A reserve i team in the winter Inter-club competition, Avonside 111, showed that it would not be out of its depth in the premier grade when it had an unexpected but decisive win against Riccarton I in the opening round of the summer table tennis series last evening. Riccarton I is a side which Invariably does well in the competition, but although it did not have its strongest combination there was no detracting from Avonside Ill’s win. John Armstrong played his part for Riccarton with three wins, but Colin Tipper, who gained the last position in the provincial rankings, succumbed to his three unranked opponents. Richard Dixon, the fourthranking Canterbury junior, and the veteran, Bert Thompson, both gained two wins for Avonside—and Thompson made Armstrong work hard for every point. The doubles play by Avonside was especially impressive. The team won all three, two in straight games. Avonside I, with the same team that won the winter championship, dropped only two matches against Dallington 11, but the score was a little flattering. Maurice Burrowes, the Canterbury No. 1, struggled to find top form, his three matches all going to the deciding game. Dallington I, led bj- the fifthranked New Zealand player, Wayne Adamson, beat Avonside II easily. Dallington has gained the high-ranking Bill Scott from Selwyn, and appears the team to provide Avonside I with its sternest opposition. Grant Adamson had a notable win over the Canterbury-ranked Graeme Main in a tight contest. Riccarton II and University had an even contest, the final doubles, won in straight games by the Riccarton pair. Ray Mercer and Stuart Armstrong, swinging the result in Riccarton’s favour. Yee Chow Boi won his three singles for University, and Chris Waines went to three ! games in all matches, but I achieved only one win. Points are: Avonside I.
