Watersiders stop work
Lyttelton watersiders held a 45-minute stop-work meet ring on Saturday morning to discuss what action to take !after three of them were put on two da\s penalty on Fri day. Although the meeting [resolved to return to work the matter is not settled, according to the secretary of 'the Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr M. E. Foster). Mr Foster said that the three men had been "victimised” when the supervisor of the stevedoring company, after talking to the foreman, told the three men not to return to work for two davs Mr J. Twomey, secretary of the Port Employers’ Association, said that the men were penalised because they had not shown up for work after “smoko " The problem of men not 'turning up for work had been !aired on September 22, said [Mr Tw'omey. He had written a letter to the watersiders’ (union about it and a stopwork meeting on full pav bad ibeen held the next Monday for the union to hear what lhe had said in the letter
