Navigator key man in trial crew
The member of the trial crew who does most of the work, hut sometimes misses out on the credit, is the navigator. The navigator, who is also the time-keeper, needs patience, a head for figures, an ability to read maps, and a good stomach for time-keeping, map-reading and calculations while jolting along in the back seat of a bucking car. He is certainly the busiest man in the crew, giving the driver navigational instructions, keeping the driver to time, and making sure the driver has heard him and acted on his instructions.
But the first essential is to keep the driver on course. It is no use being exactly to time if the car is miles from the course, and if this should happen then it is the navigator’s job to get the driver back on the route again.
