George Metcalfe dies in U.K.

George Metcalfe, a former principal tenor with the New Zealand Opera Company, has died after a heart attack in Sussex. He was 43. Mr Metcalfe was born in England, but lived in New

Zealand for nearly 15 years until 1972, when he returned to Britain to further his career. He made his debut, with the New Zealand Opera Company in 1969 and after his second performance was invited to become principal tenor. In 1970, he sang with the Los Angeles Master Chorale under Roger Wagner. and was the first singer from New Zealand to do so. i Mr, Metcalfe was made al fellow of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council in--1971 His mother still lives ini Wellington, and he is sur-j vived in England by his; wife and two children. i
