Mayor will visit China

The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) and Mrs Hay will visit China next month with the Town Clerk (Mr J. H. Gray). Their one-week trip, at the invitation of the People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, will be made after a visit to Japan. ’

Mr Hay told the City Council last evening that all expenses within China would be paid by the Chinese Government. Additional air fares from Japan to China would be paid personally. The Mayor will go to

Japan to lead e, small delegation to Christchurch’s “sister city,” Kurashiki, from November 10 to 16. Mr Hay said he considered the visit to China “a unique opportunity for a mayor of a leading city to follow up recent good-will missions, and exchange views with city officials in the People’s Republic.” The Mayor will be absent from Christchurch from November 4 to 24. The Deputy Mayor (Cr P. J. R. Skellerup) will be Acting Mayor during his absence.
