Wigram to have new aircraft
The R.N.Z.A.F.’s new training aircraft will be seen over Christchurch at the end of the month.
It will be a demonstration model of the Hamilton-built Air Trainer, which will be used by the Air Force next year. The Air Trainer will be leased from Aero Space Industries, Ltd, of Hamilton, to enable the Central Flying School’s staff at Wigram to become familiar with the aircraft prior to the publication of a flying instructors’ handbook on it. The aircraft, which will be at Wigram for a month, is larger, has a more powerful engine, and a higher performance than its nearest relative, the Air Tourer, several of which have been in use at the base for the last three years and a half. In addition it will be capable of all-weather flying, which the aging Harvards cannot do.
The Air Tourers have been used to train pilots on aviation scholarships, and to test the attitude to flight of potential pilots. The R.N.Z.A.F. will have 13 Air Trainers at Wigram next year. The first will arrive in April, and the last by the end of the year.
