Canterbury win in debating
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 5. A Canterbury team won the National Debating Society’s Norwood Trophy at the finals of its annual contest in Dunedin at the week-end.
The team, Jim Hopkins, John Milligan, and Mrs Robyn Lilley, took the negative on the subject, “Politics attracts the wrong kind of person.” Wellington had the affirmative. The judges were Messrs I. Gallaway, J. Farry, and N. Carroll, all of Dunedin. Messrs Hopkins and Milligan were also successful in the impromptu debate when they competed against Waikato. They took the affirmative in the topic, “The service should be kept secret.”
The judges were Messrs A. McLaughlin (Canterbury), Carroll and B. Hendry (Dunedin). Ben O’Connor (Wellington) won the oratory contest, and Louise McLachlan and Anne O’Mahoney (Waikato), were second equal. The judge was Mr B. Burrows (Dunedin). Peter Smith (Auckland) won the impromptu speech, which was judged by Mrs C. Hendry (Dunedin). A national team, which may compete against Australian teams next year, was selected. It is Mrs R. S. Smithies (Wellington), Messrs Milligan, Hopkins, and A. Bretherton (Auckland). The national contest next year will be held in Hamilton.
