Police on buses

Sir, —If my information is correct, members of the Christchurch police were granted free travel on the

Christchurch Transport Board buses in recognition of the service the police gave to the board during one of the major strikes in the 19205. Over and above their normal duties they worked exceptionally long hours, thereby guaranteeing the safety of drivers and passengers and also the ratepayers’ property. The board showed its appreciation by granting free travel. There would, I am sure, be a record in the board’s minute books. In these days of affluence and motor cars few policemen would avail themselves of this privilege, especially as most of the 400-odd referred to work outside normal bus hours. The privilege ceases, of course, on retirement.—Yours, etc.,
