October 3, 1975. Heathcote River
Sir—lt is very disappointing to t see the rapid deterioration of the attractive river parkway along Cashmere Road-Ashgrove Terrace. This was once a pleasant and peaceful linear river parkway and had tremendous possibilities for being extended into a much longer parkway system. Cars and motor-cycles have access to any part of the parkway ignoring children, picknickers, walkers and joggers. Consequently, there appears more and more soil, mud, noise, pollution, visual chaos and damage to trees with a dwindling away of the parkway. A parkway which has such tremendous potential for these passive recreational pursuits as well as badly needed open space should receive higher priority from the Heathcote and City Councils. A proper landscape development plan should be prepared immediately for the Heathcote River and also the Avon River, making the rivers the “features” of the city.—Yours, etc., B. A. PARKIE.
