Fisherman’s long swim
(N.Z Press Association; GISBORNE, Oct. 3. A Gisborne builder, Mr R. Kohere, took the gamble of his life in rough seas off Waikanae Beach yesterday in an attempt to save his capsized crayfishing boat — and won.
He managed to save himself and the boat by towing it behind him as he swam to the -shore about 500 yards away. It took him an hour. Mr Kohere, aged 39, was returning to shore after an unsuccessful attempt to set some crayfishing pots in the rough seas when his 12ft boat, powered by an outboard motor, was overturned.
“I was hit by the boat as it landed upside down but it didn’t affect me too much and I was able to get my gumboots off,” he said. “All I could think of at the time was saving the boat. I’d only bought it two weeks ago."
