New chief of naval staff

<N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3; Commodore J. F. McKenzie will succeed Rear Admiral E. C. Thome as Chief of Naval Staff later this year. He will be promoted to Rear Admiral, and will take up his new post on December 13, the Minister of Defence (Mr Fraser) said today. Commodore McKenzie is the Commodore, Auckland, the operational authority for R.N.Z. ships in the New Zealand area. Born at Waiuku in 1923, Commodore McKenzie was educated in Christchurch and Timaru and joined the Royal Navy as a special entry cadet in 1941. After war service in submarines, he transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1947.
