'Intelligence bogged down’
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) WASHINGTON. The Chairman of the United States House of Representatives Select Committee (Mr Otis Pike) says that America’s intelligence community is so bogged down by red tape that the United States might receive no advance warning of an impending military attack. A Democrat from New York state, Mr Pike alleged that the American taxpayer was being cheated because he [was not getting his money’s I worth from the intelligence agencies.
He blamed the Secretary of State (Dr Henry Kissinger) for the deadlock between his committee and the White House over Congressional access to secret documents and interrogation of loweri level officials about foreignpolicy decisions.
The committee will meet tomorrow to decide whether to ask the House for support in its efforts to obtain the classified documents and testimony it seeks. “This procedure would be a first step towards obtaining a contempt-of-Congress resolution if the Administration [continues to block the committee’s activities,” Mr Pike said.
