Chchair country’s filthiest
Christchurch was the worst New Zealand city for air pollution by World Health Organisation standards, the City Council’s health and general committee was told yesterday by the Chief Citv Health Inspector (Mr A. P. Millthorpe). Mr Millthorpe said he I could produce figures to aj later meeting, comparing; Christchurch pollution with! that of overseas centres.
Air pollution readings last winter showed that inner (suburban areas exceeded (Standards on an average of 120 per cent of the days.
Central city areas were above acceptable standards for an average of 13 days, and the outer suburbs exceeded standards for an average of seven days. i The worst testing site for exceeding standards on several consecutive days was Linwood, where pollution readings were over the standard for eight days. The Bealey Avenue site had an excessive reading for five days at one time. Levels of smoke and other pollutants fell considerably during August.
