(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Eight confirmed entries have been received for the world men’s softball championships in Lower Hutt next year. Entries have closed with the United States-based International Softball Federation. but there are still hopes of attracting more teams to the event which will be at Hutt Recreation Ground from January 31-February 8.
Countries which are confirmed starters at the championships are Canada, Guam, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, the United States, and Venezuela. New Zealand Softball Association secretary, Mr George Vincent said that determined efforts would be made to encourage countries which had initially shown interest in competing to come here as well.
The N.Z.S.A. president (Mr Alf Whelan) and the world championships organising committee head (Mr Kevin Baldwin) will this month embark on a nine-nation world tour in an endeavour to boost entries. They will visit Puerto Rico, Panama and the Netherlands Antilles.
Golf.— The New Zealand women’s amateur golf championships, at the Napier Golf Club’s Waiohiki course, produced a record gate, despite the four seasons weather in which the week-long tournament was played.
