Girls convicted of murder

Sir, — I was absolutely disgusted at the report of John Drew in today’s issue of “The Press” regarding the family of the two young girls recently convicted of murder in Sydney. In my opinion this report was a complete invasion of the privacy of innocent people and to state the names, addresses and occupations of the family was unnecessary and cruel. Surely the Criminal Justice Amendment Bill protects the family of the convicted? It seems to me that the freedom of the press was abused on this occasion, and one wonders if the grandmother quoted was aware that the family history was to receive such publicity. — Yours, etc., M. A., BUTLER. September 30, 1975. [Yes, the text was shown to a member of her family before publication. — Editor.]
