Meetings in committee
Sir, — Might I congratulate “The Press” on the standard of its reporting in the matter of the attempt to pass a motion of censure against the ViceChancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips.) The University Council is likewise to be congratulated for not taking the matter in committee. Too frequently the press is debarred access to board rooms and council rooms of educational bodies when appointments, resignations, and other matters of vital inter-
est to staff are being considered. The presence.of a representative of the press is salutary in seeing that justice is done and seen to be done. To quote a specific example, what defence or redress has a teacher against attacks on his competence and integrity by a principal in the privileged and protected deliberations of a board or council meeting held in commmittee.’ In his absence the teacher is denied the right of reply. — Yours, etc., QUODLIBET VIVAT MEMBRUM. October 1, 1975.
