Park board camping ban criticised

(From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, October 1. The decision of the Mount Cook National Park Board to ban camping in the park, and restrictions on camping on coastal reserves at Kaikoura, came under fire at the South Island Local Bodies Association conference today. The Mayor of Timaru (Mr C. R. Hervey) said the Mount Cook decision could well be (applied to other national [parks. [ Mr R. D. Midgley, Waijmate County, said that ssm -had been spent on the new road to Mount Cook but the ; nearest camping ground (would be at Lake Tekapo, 70 miles away. Mr M. J. Sullivan, Westland County, asked why the developed part of the park should not be controlled by the Mackenzie County Council. The restrictions placed oncamping on coastal reserves, particularly those at Kai--koura. were criticised by the- ! Mayor of Kaiapoi'(Mr B. O. j Williams). “These reserves should be open to the public instead of being restricted because of one complaint about caravans,” he said. The conference asked its executive to continue its efforts to get the restrictions lifted. A letter from the Minister of Lands (Mr Rata) said that he was awaiting a report from nark hoard na -he Mount Cook decision.
