Daggs out in force for P.M.

An address by the Prime [ Minister (Mr Rowling) at I Lincoln College yesterday was enlivened by the arrival of seven “Fred Doggs-” The seven, wearing slouch hats, gumboots, shorts, and black singlets, trooped into the hall to sit down in the front row. Their arrival was cheered and welcomed by the Prime Minister, the students, and the staff. i About 700 students heard Mr Rowling give a resume of his party’s administration of the country’s affairs. He took up some of the critical issues both at home and abroad and the Govem[ment’s tackling of them. Mr Rowling was listened to attentively, with few interjections. BURSARY PROBLEM One of the problems put to Mr Rowling by the students was for the payment of standard bursaries for the handful of students taking part in exchanges overseas, and in particular with Oregon State University. The Department of Education refuses to pay students a bursary while they are on such exchanges. This year, five students from Oregon State University are at Lincoln, and there were plans for an equal number to have gone to Oregon. The students said they did not seek additional funds from the Government, but merely asked that the bursary payments continue.

Mr Rowling said the Government was not prepared to pay norma] bursaries for students wishing to go overseas.
