FALLIN CARGO AT PORT
Cargo handled at Lyttelton Harbour during August was 75,198 tonnes down on the corresponding month last year.
It now appeared certain that tonnages would not exceed last year’s figures, the general manager of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr J. A. McPhail) said yesterday. “It is a dramatic fall,” the [board’s chairman (Mr J. (Brand) said. “Ships seem to be calling, but there’s just not the tonnage in them.” [ After 11 months, the total [tonnage of 2,024,133 was a 39,843-tonne decrease on last [year. Total overseas tonnage was down 15,232 tonnes, and total coastal tonnage was down 24,611 tonnes. From October 1, 1974, to [September 22, 794 trading [vessels had entered the port [compared with 929 trading vessels during the same 11973-74 period.
