New bout in Beirut
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) BEIRUT (Lebanon), September 30. Rival Lebanese militiamen traded mortar and machinegun fire in suburban Beirut late tonight shattering hopes of a quick return to normal life after more than two weeks of warfare in the capital. Police sources said that nine more bodies were found, raising the casualty toll for the city-wide fighting between Right-wing Christian and Left-wing Moslem militias to at least 347 killed and more than 600 wounded. Mortar and rocket fire flared briefly after nightfall as Moslems from the suburb of Chiah clashed with Christians from outlying Ain Ruinmanch. Police sources said the fighting was started By the slaying of a Christian in Chiah and later of three Leftist Druze at a roadblock in Ajn Rummaneh. Angered by the incident, the socialist leader, Kamal Jumblatt, ordered militiamen from neighbouring Chiah to retaliate against Right-wing Christian Phalangist party positions in Ain Rummaneh. The fighting lasted for more than one hour before security forces were able to move in and separate the two sides.
