YOUNGEST CAPTAIN
Captain Jessie Gunn (above) is, at 23, the youngest captain now serving in the New Zealand Army. She is also the only officer in the New Zealand Women’s Royal Army Corps serving in New Zealand Force SouthEast Asia in Singapore. Captain Gunn was promoted to her present rank on her birthday, August 29.
She has been in the army since leaving St Mary’s College, Auckland, in 1969, and began her career as a private in the Army General Staff in Wellington.
In 1971 she graduated from the Officer Cadet Training Unit at Bumham Military Camp but had to wait nearly four months until she was 19 before she was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Captain Gunn has served as assistant adjutant and Officer Commanding the N.Z.W.RA.C at Linton Military Camp and adjutant and Officer Commanding the N.Z.W.R.AC. at Fort Dorset, Wellington.
