Matete at centre for Kiwis

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND.

Paul Matete, whose closest brush with international Rugby league was as a reserve for a test against Britain in 1970, will be in the centres for the Kiwis in the international championship match against Australia at Carlaw Park on Saturday. He was chosen yesterday by the national selectors to fill the position left vacant by the injury to the regular test centre, John O’Sullivan. His selection caps off a good year for the 25-year-old. He was a member of the New Zealand Maori team which won the South Pacific Cup in Port Moresby last April, and has been a mainstay of the Otahuhu club side which won the Auckland league’s treble/ Matete won his place in the team ahead of some tough competition from another member of the Maori team, John Smith, and Bruce Dickison (Canterbury).

The team is: W. Collfcoat (Auckland), P. Orchard (Wellington), P. Matete (Auckland), D. Williams (Auckland), F. Ah Kuoi (Auckland), R. Jarvis (Auckland), K, Stirling (Auckland, captain), J. Greengrass (Canterbury), T. Conroy (Auckland), D Sorensen (Auckland), A. Coll (West Coast), R. Baxendalt (West Coast), Murray Eada (Auckland, viceeaptaln).
