Seven years gaol

A young man who killed a widow of 80 in her Grev Lj-nn home when she declined to let him use her telephone, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
Mr Justice Henry’ told Arama Maruariki, aged 18. a factory hand, that his offence was “a brutal assault on a defenceless, frail old lady.” Maruariki, who denied a charge of murdering Mrs Muriel Poole, had been found guilty of manslaughter. The prisoner’s description of Mrs Poole catching his hand in her door and what had followed was consistent with the injuries suffered by Mrs Poole, said his Honour. It was clear that Maruariki had known what he was doi’.g — drunkenness was no defence in itself, and sentence was being imposed based on the statement given to police by Manferiki. "You said you aimed blows at her head and body with your right hand as you held her with your left hand.” The prisoner had then left her crying on the floor, and had abandoned her to her fate-
